Jonathan Shar is general manager and senior vice president of CNNMoney.com. In this role, Shar
oversees the business operations and P&L of the website, including audience, traffic, finance,
business and sales development, ad operations, product development and monetization strategy.
He also serves as the chief business-side liaison with CNN.
Shar assumed his current position in October 2007, and since then he has overseen the site's
remarkable growth: according to Nielsen, unique visitors in 2008 were at an all-time high, with
an average of more than 9 million unique users per month—a 19 percent increase over 2007. Page
views topped 2.4 billion, a 49 percent increase over 2007. Additionally, the site streamed
nearly 21 million video segments—five times as many as the closest competitor—in January 2009.
A 14-year veteran of Time Inc., Shar was most recently vice president of consumer marketing for
the Sports Illustrated Group, where he oversaw the consumer franchises for Sports Illustrated,
SI for Kids and Golf magazines. He was also responsible for ancillary products and
audience development for SI’s digital properties.
Before joining SI, Shar served as consumer marketing director for FORTUNE from 2001-02, and
he held various roles in consumer marketing prior to that. In 2000, Shar was a recipient of the
prestigious Time Inc. Presidents Award.
Shar earned his B.A. in Economics from Tufts University and his M.B.A. from the University
of Michigan. He lives in Chappaqua, NY, with his wife, Marla, and their three children, Noah,
Jessica and Emma.
